During today's Gamescom Opening Night Live broadcast, Sony surprised everyone with an announcement on a new piece of hardware. The DualSense Edge is the “first-ever high-performance, ultra-customizable controller” for the PlayStation 5, and it is a controller that has the potential to compete with the superb Elite Series 2 controllers for the Xbox One.

The new controller has all of the functionality that a conventional DualSense controller provides in addition to a variety of customization options, which has the potential to make one of the most appealing PC controllers (opens in new tab) for gaming even more enticing.

In addition to being able to completely remap the buttons on the PS5 DualSense Edge, users can also tweak the sensitivity of the analog sticks as well as the dead zones. You can even shorten the distance the trigger needs to travel in order to make faster inputs in shooters, similar to how the Xbox Elite Series 2 wireless controllers work (opens in new tab).

That is not the only thing that the high-end controllers have in common with one another. The Edge will come with two different sets of back buttons as well as three different swappable stick caps (a regular dome, a high dome, and a low dome) (low and high dome).

PlayStation will also offer replacement stick modules, which means that if you wear them down to the nub, you won't need to buy a full new controller. This is because you can change the stick modules individually.

A braided USB Type-C cable, which can be secured into the controller using a specific connector housing, lives inside the carrying case with the controller and all of its other parts and pieces. The carrying case also contains the controller itself.

The Edge will include the capability to save numerous control profiles, any of which may be quickly swapped out via the on-controller interface at any time. Your in-chat balance as well as the game loudness may both be managed using the same interface.

According to the art director Daisuke Kurihara, “We wanted to build on the legacy of iconic PlayStation controllers by creating a controller that empowers players to experiment and personalize elements based on their own unique playstyle—whether they are a competitive gamer or someone who just enjoys having more options to customize their play.”

“The DualSense Edge wireless controller also features a number of thoughtful design touches that we hope players will enjoy, including a distinct DualSense controller-inspired black-and-white color scheme and a unique PlayStation Shapes pattern on the touch pad and trigger surfaces,” the company said.

“We are hopeful that players will take pleasure in these features.”

Although there was no mention of a release date or price, further details should be available over the next few months. Let's keep our fingers crossed that they'll be some interesting new hues.
